3 Things You Can Leave OFF Your Résumé in 2025

A new year means replenished budgets, new job postings, and more hiring. It’s also a time to examine new trends in hiring and how that affects your career.

As hiring trends change, it’s time to update your old résumé to remain competitive. As we move forward into the new year, here are 3 things you need to leave off of your résumé.

1. The date your resume was updated.

The phrase, “Résumé updated 2024,” or anything similar shouldn’t be included in your résumé. This adds zero value and distracts from the valuable information the hiring manager or recruiter should be paying attention to.

2. Reason for leaving each job

If you have a reason for leaving next to each job on your résumé, remove it now! It’s extraneous information that isn’t helping you, and adds no value to your application. Focus on having accurate dates next to your positions and leave it there.

3. Full address

Adding your complete address used to be a common occurrence but now, it’s something you want to avoid. Adding your complete address can cause you the opportunity. Managers may decide for you that your commute is too long or discriminate against you because of your neighborhood. Remove that risk by removing your address.

As a replacement, you can focus on just your city and state or nothing at all. You are not required to provide this information on your résumé.

Your résumé is a tool. That tool’s job is to get you an interview. Because of this, your résumé shouldn’t be filled with irrelevant information that distracts from your qualifications instead of propels you forward.
