Just wrapped an incredibly powerful coaching session with a client who was deeply concerned about her ability to perform in an upcoming interview. She was worried about memorizing answers. Immediately, | reminded her that interview prep isn’t about memorizing answers, it’s about strategy, clarity, and communication. If you have these down, you will confidently present answers to any question – even the curveball questions.
Employers always approach interviewing with a strategy – a plan to get information out of you that will help them make the best decision for them. YOUR strategy is giving them the information they need to see you as the only viable option. This is business.
Clarity is key. One of the biggest challenges I see candidates make is assuming they won’t have the perfect answer to the question. I hear it all the time – “I don’t have that experience” or “I don’t have an answer to that question.” 99% of the time, this is untrue. You have an answer. You just don’t understand how certain parts of your background speak to the job.
Clarity helps you see your own experience clearly and connect the dots, in your mind first, between the role and your background.
Communication is how you bring this all together. Your ability to articulate your experience well, and manage your non-verbal communication, is what separates you from the pack – especially when met with an unexpected question. You’ll be able to navigate the nerves, present strongly, and formulate a response that impresses your interviewer and moves you forward in the process.
It’s impossible to know every question that will be asked so preparing for an interview isn’t about memorizing answers. This is a conversation, and, in a conversation, unexpected questions come up, but that’s ok. If you have a strategy, are clear on how your unique skills speak to the role and can comfortably communicate this – you will be positioned to win!
