A message to jobseekers:
Especially those focused on joining diverse, equitable and inclusive organizations –
When researching, it isn’t enough to look for companies with employees and leaders who look like you. You have to be concerned with their mindsets and attitudes towards DEIB. This can be sniffed out several ways but the best way is during the interview process.
Ask your interviewer about their personal philosophies on DEIB. Ask about the challenges they see in the organization and what they’ve done to influence positive change.
In the Black community, we often discuss “kinfolk” vs “skin folk,” those who look like you vs those who are truly on your side.
Questions like these will help you know exactly who you’re dealing with.
